Girls on the Run

Williamsburg, VA - 6 Jun 2008 Avalon wishes to recognize "Girls on the Run" of Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School and their coaches, Lesley Henderson and Mindy Thompson, for choosing us to be the recipient of their fundraising efforts. The girls’ hard work and subsequent $263.92 donation will directly affect the future of the 8 adults and 9 children the Emergency Shelter and Transitional Housing Programs are currently serving.

Beyond the monetary gift, the fact that this group in particular would recognize Avalon in this manner is especially poignant. The Girls on the Run mission coincides with that for which we strive for our clients: “self respect”, empowerment, and “healthy living”—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

They are to be commended for being cognizant of the work we do at Avalon and for their interest in making our community a safer and healthier one.

Mother's Day Love for Avalon Moms

Sorority Sisters donate gifts for MomWilliamsburg, VA - 15 May 2008 The mothers in Avalon's Residential Services Program were showered with love this past Mother's Day! Bath & Body Works at New Town "adopted" a Mom who will be transitioning from Avalon to her own permanent housing later this summer. The associates bought new dishes, silverware, kitchen accessories, coordinating comforter set and home accessories to help Mom furnish her new apartment. And after all that decorating, she'll be able to pamper herself with the Bath & Body Works products that were also given.
For the second year in a row, the Williamsburg graduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta and Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority brought purses stuffed with goodies for the Moms in the Emergency Shelter. In the photo, sorority sisters Tara Belfast, Jennifer Garcia, and Shylan Scott drop off the gifts with Carmen Blair, Avalon's Volunteer Coordinator
