Youth

Domestic Violence affects children, too.Domestic violence destroys families and is especially harmful to children and youth. Avalon believes in early intervention and prevention services for children and youth through Individual Counseling, Support Groups, School-based Violence Prevention, and Parenting Education and Support.

Individual Counseling...

In conjunction with counseling services for adults, individual counseling for their children may be arranged. Services are provided free of charge through the Avalon Community Outreach Program. For more information call 258-5022.

Support Groups...

Avalon teams with various support groups in the greater Williamsburg-James City County-Yorktown area. A complete list of these support groups, and other valuable resources, can be found in our Resource Center.

School-based Services...

Individual counseling sessions are provided for students by referral from school officials. In addition, Avalon facilitates weekly education and support groups for special needs students in local high schools. The programs address issues related to anger management, conflict resolution, self-concept, sexual harassment, and relationship violence.

Through Avalon's Speakers Bureau, crisis intervention, court advocacy services, and training for administrators on topics related to family violence and sexual assault are available to all schools.

Peer Educators from One In Four

One In Four, founded by Dr. John D. Foubert and started at William & Mary, is a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing rape. One In Four provides presentations, training, and technical assistance to men and women, with a focus on all-male programming targeted toward colleges, high schools, the military, and local community organizations. With One In Four's RV Tour, a peer education team travels across the U.S. giving presentations; their hope is to lower men's likelihood of raping.

The 2007 peer educators, Dan Mollison, Jor-El Carabello, J.T. Newberry and James Ambrose visited Avalon in August. The group toured the campus and learned how Avalon is working to reduce the incidence of sexual assault in the Historic Triangle.
