Domestic Violence Awareness Month

  October 29 - 31, 2007
We wrap-up Domestic Violence Awareness Month, by showing how Avalon is meeting the needs of victims in our community. Beyond providing shelter and counseling, our cutting-edge programs are working to increase economic security for survivors. In so doing, women will be fully empowered - capable of providing for themselves and their children in their own safe, secure, permanent housing.

A History of Empowerment

  • 1979 - A task force began as a study group and a needs assessment was completed
  • 1980 - The Williamsburg Task Force on battered woman was incorporated and obtained 501(c)3 status. A system of safe houses--community members willing to open their homes to women in danger--was created
  • 1983 - A 2-bedroom home was rented as Avalon's first shelter
  • 1985 - Sexual Assault services were added. The current shelter site was located and purchased, expanding capacity to 16 shelter beds and 1 transitional apartment
  • 1993 - The Board approved a plan to build a new 19-bed emergency shelter, 6 transitional apartments and a daycare. A Capitol Campaign began.
  • 1998 - Construction began and was completed in one year
  • 2005 - Avalon celebrated its 25th Anniversary
  • 2007 - The Life Skills Program was added
