The lazy, hazy days of summer are quickly approaching!  School is almost out; and soon many of us will be off on vacations, enjoying the beaches, and bar-b-quing with friends and family.

Work at Avalon continues as we attempt to break the "Cycle of Violence".  Because of your support, we are empowering survivors and making great strides!  Hampton Roads is bucking national trends and seeing a decrease in certain crimes.  However, the incidence of rape is on the rise.  There is still much to be done and there is something you can do to help our staff help our women in their "Empowerment Walk".  If you happen to be in town in the upcoming weeks, there are numerous ways in which you can make a difference.  Read on...

Sexual Assault on the Rise

Woman
The FBI's Preliminary Uniform Crime Report for 2006 has been released.  For the second year in a row, violent crimes have increased after a 15-year low.  The good news, is that the Tidewater region saw a decrease in some violent crimes like property crimes and motor vehicle theft.  Sadly, however, the statistics were different for rape, increasing by as much as 10%.  View the findings specific to Virginia.

    Clothes to "Move In"

Woman with shopping bags        House for sale

Avalon has entered into a new partnership with The Wardrobe, an "upscale resale"
consignment shop at The Village Shops at KingsmillThe Wardrobe is consigning designer handbags, shoes, purses, jewelry and clothing on Avalon's behalf.
How can you help?  Clean out your closets and look for those "special" items you've been hanging on to for too long.  Maybe they just don't fit anymore. Maybe you wore them once for a special occasion. Donate them to Avalon, a 501(c)3 agency, for a tax deductible contribution.  Then Avalon will consign them at The Wardrobe.
How does this help domestic violence survivors?  Profits received from the sale of these pieces will be put into an account which will be used for housing down payments, utility deposits, or other moving expenses for the women at Avalon's shelter who are making the transition to their own permanent homes.  Contact: Erin Pitre @ 258-5022 or erin@avaloncenter.org for more information or to make a donation for the project
Mark your calendars for July 23rd for the "official launch".  Join us for an evening of raffles, hors' devours, and special sales!
