Wrapping Up Our Fiscal
Year
Avalon's fiscal
year ends June 30, 2008. Among
our highlights thus far...
Earned full accreditation from the Virginia
Sexual & Domestic Violence Action Alliance
Made the Avalon website
bi-lingual by adding
translated resources for Spanish speaking
clients
Received funding approval for FY2008-2009
from Virginia Department of Social ServicesVirginia Department of
Social Services, DCJS V-STOP grant, Department of Housing &
Community Development, DCJS Sexual Assault
grant, Greater Williamsburg United
Way, James City County and
York County
As of May 31st, we had served 159 women and
children in the Emergency Shelter--a 14%
increase in numbers served in the Emergency
Shelter during FY06-07, served 22 women and
children in Transitional Housing, and counseled
110 through the Outreach Office
Created the Avalon Data Matrix, a
compilation of data reports that track client
participation and program effectiveness in the
follow-up, occupancy, and services. The Data
Matrix allows Avalon to calculate costs per
person, identifies individual
client progress and illuminates possible
obstacles.

Elder Abuse
June 15th is Elder Abuse
Awareness Day
The U.S. population age 65 and
over is expected to double in size within the
next 25 years. By 2030, some 72 million people
will be 65 years or older. As the number of
older Americans grows, so does the number of
potential targets for elder abuse.

Summertime
Volunteering
With family vacations, summer camps, and
pool days, it can be tough to fit in a regular
volunteer schedule. Have you thought about
using your talents for one time projects?
This allows you or your group the chance to
still help your community and have time
for plenty of summer fun! One day volunteer
projects at Avalon include gardening, painting,
scrapbooking, or teaching a life skills
class. Contact Carmen Blair, Avalon's
Volunteer Coordinator
and let her know how you would like to help
out.

Thanks to the James City
County Ruritans for being the latest group
to "Adopt" a Transitional
Apartment.
Like many non-profit
organizations in our
community, Avalon typically experiences
a decrease in donations during the summer
months. We understand these are hard economic
times. Please consider even a small cash
gift or an item from the Avalon Wish List

Since 1979, Avalon has been
serving the Greater Williamsburg community
with one goal in mind. We are
committed to intervening in and reducing
the incidence of domestic violence and sexual
assault. In order to achieve this
mission, Avalon offers shelter, advocacy,
education and support to survivors and fosters
awareness and prevention by educating the
community. |
