Quick News to Use
February 2008
For many, the month of February brings to mind images of hearts, roses, chocolates and candies. For families living with abuse or individuals suffering from the scars of assault, it may be hard to feel love all around. If you are in a healthy relationship, take the time to let those people close to you know you appreciate, trust, and care for them. If you are in the latter group, trying to cope, survive, and feeling alone, recognize that love and support is available. Avalon wants to be the foundation and safety net you need to reach your own personal empowerment.

Domestic Violence Counts:07
A 24-hour census of domestic violence shelters and services across the United States

In one 24-hour survey period...
  • 53,203 victims were served in one day
  • 20,582 Hotline calls were answered
  • 29,902 community members were educated

Sadly...

  • 7,707 requests for services were unmet due to a lack of resources

Programs across the country pointed to transportation as an area where most resources are needed. Avalon is no different. Among the most critical needs on our Wish List are gas cards. The rising cost of fuel is putting a serious strain on our residents' finances and thus the ability to get to and from work. Your thoughtful consideration is appreciated

My Name Is Anne...

My name is Anne....I got married the winter of '97. Looking back on my abusive relationship, it was always there but for some strange reason I didn't want to see how jealous he was. He wanted to be around me all the time. I thought he loved me like that. I remember before we got married all the attention I really liked, because I never had the attention of my father so I needed to be needed and loved. The first time he hit me I was shocked and couldn't believe it. What really blew my mind was how sorry he was; he promised that it would never happen again, and for a while it didn't. Until we got married. Once I was married, the real person had shown himself. I couldn't spend time with my family. He thought I was having sex with the maintenance man, so when he left he would make me close the blinds and when he returned, he'd check to see if they were moved. He would check my underwear, and sit outside at my job.

Woman Holding a Broken Heart
My life totally changed.  I became scared, uneasy and unsure. My arm was broken and my nose was busted. I was raped; everything that comes with being abused I went through it. Finally stopped raining. The sun started to peep out. It was hard, but when my way to escape came, I took it. And today, with the help of Avalon, and many recovery classes I'm learning to build my self-worth and self-esteem. I love me today. I'm worthy of great things, but one lesson I've learned about love is that it's unsure. I will keep that in mind the next time I think I'm in love.
