Summer days are winding down. Believe it or
not, The College of William & Mary
welcomes new freshman on August 24th! With school days in mind,
this month's issue of "Quick News to Use" will provide
information for students of all ages. See how one group
is raising awareness of assault, learn to identify the warning
signs of abuse and bullying, know where to turn should you or
someone you care about be victimized, and get educated on how
to become more involved in promoting safety in our own
community. | |
| One In Four |
One In Four, founded by Dr. John D. Foubert and
started at William & Mary, is a non-profit organization
dedicated to preventing rape. One In Four provides
presentations, training, and technical assistance to men and women,
with a focus on all-male programming targeted toward colleges, high
schools, the military, and local community organizations. With
One In Four's RV Tour, a peer education
team travels across the U.S. giving presentations;
their hope is to lower men's likelihood of raping.
Led by W & M Sexual
Assault educator, Trisha Hunsaker, the team visited Avalon. The group toured the
campus and learned how we are working to reduce the incidence
of sexual assault in the Historic
Triangle. | |

| Protect the Future Generation |
One-third of teens report some kind of abuse in their
romantic relationships, including verbal and emotional
abuse. Abusive
behaviors that are not physical may be harder to recognize. If
you're a teen, take a Healthy Relationship quiz to
see if your relationship is as healthy as you deserve. If you are a
friend, learn to recognize the red flags, listen and be
compassionate, and offer resources to help your friend. In
addition to the National Teen Dating Hotline,
both Avalon and its community
partners are available locally. If you are an educator,
add a component to your curriculum that
specifically addresses teen dating violence. As a parent,
foremost, be a role model. Secondly, recognize that bullying is an abusive tactic
impacting the youngest victims; take action early!

"It's Time to Talk" About Domestic Violence
Liz Claiborne, Inc. is sponsoring the 3rd
annual "It's Time to Talk Day" on
September 25, 2007. Around the country, talk radio,
government officials, domestic violence advocates, businesses,
schools and the public-at-large will take a moment - or more - to
talk openly about an issue that affects nearly one in three women at
some point in their lifetime.
Take this opportunity to gather your friends,
neighbors, co-workers and families to share what you know about
Avalon and the impact it
has had on survivors in Williamsburg, James City County and
York County since 1979.
In addition to Event Ideas through loveisnotabuse.com, Avalon's
Speaker's Bureau is available for educational presentations or
to provide additional resources to assist you in your
outreach efforts. Call Erin Pitre at 258-5022 to schedule a
time. It is "Time to Talk"!
